The Things That Matter Most

It doesn’t seem to matter much—
Picking toys and laundry off the floor,
Changing diapers and brushing little teeth,
Cooking meal after meal.
Pouring endlessly into little lives.
It doesn’t seem to matter much—
Sitting behind a keyboard, typing words on a screen,
Going on occasion to sort used clothes
and dented cans for the poor,
Meeting people but never really knowing how to move
beyond the superficial to the hard things—
The heart things.
I don’t want to slip in and out of life
Without so much as a ripple.
But the years are slipping by and I’ve yet to stir the water.
I have so many heart things—
Hard things—
That I long to do.
It doesn’t seem to matter much.
And yet…
The big things are made up
Of a thousand little moments,
A thousand little choices,
A thousand little breaths.
So I breathe deep
And pick up another toy,
Type another word,
Sort another pile of clothes,
And keep on doing what’s in front of me to do.
It doesn’t seem to matter much.

But the truth is,
The small things matter most.

If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. (Luke 16:10)

We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean.
But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.
(Mother Teresa)
