This week marks a few important dates for me and my husband. Yesterday was Thanksgiving Day (the Canadian one, if you’re confused). And Wednesday is our fourth anniversary. We have less than three weeks until our new addition to the family is due (hooray!). The trees have turned the most beautiful colours and the weather is sunny and warm. We are surrounded by friends and family … and by turkey dinner upon turkey dinner. We have so much to be thankful for and so much to celebrate! I love this time of year!
However, next week, Dave will have been out of work for exactly two months. The financial sector in Ontario had a record-breaking loss of 29,000 jobs last month, which explains why the job boards have had such slim pickings. The newspapers say that we are heading into another recession. I have tried really hard not to let all the grim news overshadow my enjoyment of the blessings that God has given us. But discouragement is a tough enemy to fight sometimes!
So more for me than for you, I am going to reiterate some of the Bible verses that God has spoken to me over the last few months:
Psalm 37:5 – I have been young and I have been old, but I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging for bread.
Psalm 18:30,32 – God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for those who look to Him for protection. … God arms me with strength. He makes my way perfect.
Isaiah 45:2-3 – I will go before you and will level the mountains. I will break down gates of bronze and cut through gates of iron. I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.
Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you a hope and a future.”
The media can spit out all the dark news they want. It doesn’t change the fact that God is in control and that He holds my little family in His hands. So in addition to all the other things we have to celebrate at this time of year, let me add one more cause for celebration: breakthrough is just around the corner.
